Undergraduate – Double major/Minor

Regulations on DFLL Courses Open to Students Outside of DFLL

  • Generally speaking, the Required Courses of the department are not open to students from other departments, except for students with a Double Major or Minor (in the Language Field or in the Literature Field) in DFLL as well as students in the Education Program (English profession). If you belong to either one of the three categories, please refer to the following regulations.

  • Please note that students who minor in the Language Field or the Literature Field are not allowed to take courses in the other field. Students who minor in Spanish, German and French are not allowed to take courses in the Language Field or the Literature Field.

  • “Introduction to Linguistics” and language training courses such as “English Composition (I-II)” are only open to students from the department as well as Double Majors and Minors in the Language Field. Language training courses will be held in small classes and are not open to auditors.

  • Literature courses such as: “Approaches to Literature,” “Introduction to Western Literature,” “European Literature,” “English Literature,” and “American Literature” are only open to students from the department as well as Double Majors and Minors in the Literature Field. Please ask the instructor whether the above courses can be audited.

  • “Translation” is only open to students from the department, from the Chinese-English Translation and Interpretation Program, and to Double Majors. The course is not open to auditors.

  • “English Composition (III)” is only open to students from the department and Double Majors. It is not open to auditors.

Instructions for the Certification Card issued to Students with a Double Major/Minor in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures

  • Many students from other departments who have a Double Major/Minor in the Department will approach the instructors during the add/drop period to add DFLL courses. However, since the instructors might not know each one of the students, they cannot make an immediate decision. In order to simplify the verification process, the DFLL office will issue a Certification Card to verified students. If students would like to consult DFLL instructors about course selection, they can seek the instructors at the beginning of each semester, and show them the Certification Card together with their student IDs for course addition.

  • The Certification Card will not be reissued. Please take care not to lose it.

  • The purpose of the Certification Card is to verify that the cardholder is a Double Major/Minor student in the department, and to simplify the verification process for both students and instructors. Please use the card with your student ID. Possession of the Certification Card does not guarantee access to a certain course. The instructor still has the authority to decide whether or not that course can accept more students.
