4/20 (Wed) English Corner: Shall we get some coffee? Taiwan’s very own coffee

4/24 (Sun) Online Alumni Talk: From DFLL to Diplomacy – In Conversation with Cheng & Li (joining from India and France)

  • Speaker 1: Charles Cheng (程志瀚) is a third secretary posted in India. He’s tasked with the Indo-Pacific, the Quad and overall strategy-related issues. He was the first officer at the ministry to cover the Indo-Pacific strategy when it was launched by the Trump administration. During his three and a half years at the HQ, in addition to the Indo-Pacific, he also covered the Marshall Islands, the New Southbound Policy and New Zealand.
  • Speaker 2: Jackie Li (李治齊) is a 33 years old former student from the Department of Foreign Languages and Literature in National Taiwan University from 2006-2010. He first learned Japanese and French for 3 years, and then decided to do an exchange program in Sciences Po Paris in France. That one year of living and studying abroad, far from his family and friends, inspired him to pursue a career in Foreign Affairs to raise awareness on Taiwan abroad. Jackie started his career in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 2014 and was then subsequently posted to Paris in 2017. In 2020, he moved to Aix-en-Provence in Southern France to help establish the new Taiwanese office. He still loves to backpack when he has free time, a habit he nurtured during his years in Paris.

  • Short description of the workshop: This informal, interactive workshop familiarizes students with the history, formal features, and extraordinary cultural legacy of blues music—from its birth in the U.S. South to its global presence in the twenty-first century and its influence on other musical genres (R&B, rock & roll, heavy metal, etc.). Attendees will listen to and watch several samples, discuss a selection of lyrics, and learn a few basics about African American history. We will explore the affective state known as ‘the blues’ and how blues music helps performers and audiences cope with it in the face of extraordinary hardship and injustice.
