Old English, Fall 2019

2019-08-23

Do you ever wonder where words come from? Are you interested in origins of English culture? Do you like foreign languages? Are you a Tolkien fan?

Try Anglo-Saxon. Its the way English was spoken a thousand years ago. There is a rich literature waiting for you to explore, and its just a semester away. In this gentle introduction to Old English, we will have fun trying to speak Old English as we study six chapters of grammar and sample the greatest hits of Anglo-Saxon literature (in modern English translation). By the end of the semester, you will be able to read simple Old English texts in their original language, and you will know about things which you didn’t know existed, such as elf-magic, runes, and manuscripts.
