The Magic of Linguistics: Turning What We Learn into Real-World Impact |
Overview |
Linguistics isn’t just a theoretical exercise in the classroom—it can also be a practical tool that helps people regain communication and rebuild their lives. In this talk, I’ll begin by sharing my own career transition: how a graduate from a Foreign Languages and Literature department found her way into the world of speech-language therapy, gradually applying knowledge from phonetics, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics across a wide range of clinical settings. Drawing from my experience working in hospitals, I’ll share how linguistic insights have helped me support clients of all ages and backgrounds—from children with language delay or articulation problems, to adults with post-stroke aphasia. In every case, linguistics has provided me with the tools to observe, analyze, and intervene meaningfully. If you’ve ever wondered where linguistics can take you, I hope this talk will offer some inspiration and help you reimagine its value—not just as an academic field, but as a foundation for real-world impact and unexpected career possibilities. |
