Established in 1928, National Taiwan University (NTU) is a leading research university in Asia with over 30,000 students. The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures (DFLL) welcomes applications for the following faculty positions.

I. General requirements (see also specific requirements under each track):

Minimum requirements include a PhD in a related field, a strong publication record and university-level teaching experience. NTU is a research institution; faculty are expected to pursue national grants and publish in top-tier journals. All full-time faculty members teach at least one DFLL service course such as Composition, Oral Training, and (if applicable) Freshman English. Faculty may direct theses and serve on various university and department committees. Some knowledge of Chinese and experience in teaching in a Chinese-speaking environment is a plus.

II. Openings:

  Track One—French. One full-time position. The successful candidates should:

• • Have a PhD in Teaching French as a Foreign Language or a related field, such as French Linguistics or French Literature.
  • Have experience of teaching French as a Foreign Language.

  Track Two—TESOL. One full-time position. The successful candidates should:

• • Have a PhD in TESOL or a related field.
  • Be capable of offering the courses required by the NTU Center for Teacher Education (including Teaching Methods and Materials in English, Practicum in English, and Internship in English).

  Track Three—Composition and Writing Studies. One full-time position. The successful candidates should:

• • Have a PhD in composition/rhetoric (or in English or a related discipline) with a specialization on professional writing and/or writing pedagogies.
  • Have experience teaching academic writing at different undergraduate levels, preferably with an emphasis on multilingual students and/or EFL students. Experience in designing, coordinating, and/or assessing Freshman and Advanced Composition programs is a plus.
  • Have a robust research and publication record, preferably within one of the following subfields: comparative and transnational rhetoric, literacy studies, writing across the curriculum, writing center studies, and multilingualism.
  • Be capable of serving as an advisor and/or coordinator of the department’s Composition courses to address the challenges brought by AI technology.

  Track Four—Literary and Cultural Studies. One full-time position. The Department is committed to hiring a talented scholar:

• • Whose work holds a great promise of intellectual leadership or whose ongoing work has attracted international audiences and will contribute to greater recognition of the Department’s research profile.
  • From various subfields in literary studies or cultural studies, which might include, but not be limited to, critical studies of an emerging field such as digital humanities, the Anthropocene, environmental humanities, or any aspects of planetary futures.

III. Salary and Ranks:

Salaries are set by the R.O.C. Ministry of Education. The regular teaching load is 7 hours per week for full professors, and 8 for associate and assistant professors; assistant professors are granted a course reduction for the first three years, so the starting course load is 2:2. Other benefits include merit pay (subject to eligibility), startup funds, family health insurance, research grants and awards (on a competitive basis), and subsidized university housing (subject to availability).

• • • Track Two—TESOL:

Please prepare and submit a lesson plan of no more than 5 pages for a 2-hour English composition class of 20 first-year English majors, and record a 15-minute demonstration video in which you briefly introduce your lesson plan before you give a demonstration lesson.

• • • Track Three—Composition and Writing Studies:

Please record a 15-minute teaching demo video for a “Composition I” class. This course is the equivalent of most “Freshman Composition” courses. It focuses on effective paragraph writing (unity, coherence, development) as well as variety and accuracy of sentence structures.

• • • Track Four—Literary and Cultural Studies:

Please demo-teach, in a 15-minute session, an undergraduate-level or graduate-level literature or culture course focusing on a text of your choice that not only demonstrates your teaching abilities but also helps to showcase your ideas about a course suitable for Foreign Languages and Literatures upper-level undergraduate majors or graduate students.

Successful candidates will be asked to provide a substantial dossier, two letters of reference, and other credentials for further evaluation. Short-listed candidates will be interviewed.
