Stefan Andriopoulos is Professor of Germanic Languages and Co-founder of Center for Comparative Media at Columbia University. Specializing in media archaeology, modern German literature, and early cinema, Prof. Andriopoulos has published Possessed: Hypnotic Crimes, Corporate Fiction, and the Invention of Cinema (2008) and Ghostly Apparitions: German Idealism, the Gothic Novel, and Optical Media (2013) to critical acclaim, along with numerous articles with prestigious journals. He is currently completing a book manuscript which investigates the ways in which new technologies, from the time of Gutenberg through today, have facilitated the circulation of rumors and disinformation.
Media studies embraces and advances interdisciplinary approaches, a positioning that makes it increasingly essential in humanities inquiries focused on such entangled issues as the climate crisis, geopolitical tensions, and the general mindset/behavioral change brought about by new technologies. On the other hand, practitioners of media theory have demonstrated illuminating ways to understand the mode of thinking specific to a period manifest in literary and art works.
In this two-day workshop, Prof. Andriopoulos will give two talks (one on his earlier books and one on his current research), lead a seminar on media theory, and participate in a forum where local scholars present their projects in media studies. We invite interested people, in particular scholars, graduate students, and upper-level undergraduates, to join us in exploring this field.
Please note that: A) the workshop is to be conducted in English; B) advance readings will be prepared for the attendees; C) the activities may be signed up for independently; and D) lunch is not included.
