Overview |
When you come to a river, you have two choices. You can take the bridge that’s already been built and walk straight across. Or you can step onto the stones nearby, jumping from one to the next. Both paths will get you to the other side—but the stones may lead you to very different landing places. If you start from a background in English or linguistics, the paths ahead of you can be surprisingly diverse. In this talk, I’d like to share the winding journey I’ve taken—the detours, the unexpected turns, and the many temporary “landing points” along the way. I’ll also talk about what it currently takes, within today’s system, to become a speech-language therapist. And perhaps through my story, you’ll be able to imagine what it might feel like to arrive in a hospital setting carrying a linguistics background—discovering how language knowledge can find its place in the world of healthcare.
