Dear professors,

Welcome to NTU and especially to DFLL. We are DFLL TA Zooey Tsou (3366-3216) and TA Megan Lee (3366-3219) who are in charge of student affairs. We will briefly explain to you how advisor-advisee system works in NTU and if you have any question about advising, you are always welcome to contact us.

1. Who will be advisors?
All DFLL full-time teachers will be considered as advisors (except for those who are on sabbatical leaves or other permitted leaves.)

2. What should advisors do?
Advisors will help keep an eye on students and guide them if they need any help. Most students have no problems in their school life or studies, but there are still one or two rare cases that might need your special attention. If your advisee has any problem (such as family issues, emotional problems or trouble in studies etc.,) you may give them some advice. Of course, you are always welcome to contact TAs for support if you need more information on advising. If necessary, we will help advisors report students’ special cases to the University to search for more help from other units. (e.g. Student Counseling Center, Office of Student Affairs, etc.,)

3. How many advisees can I take in each school year?
All students can choose their advisors at the beginning of each school year. First-year students will no longer have advisors assigned to them. We suggest that they choose their advisors from their teachers of required subjects.

All undergraduate students will first ask for their intended advisors’ consent to be their advisors, whether by having the advisors sign a form provided by the department, or through email communications. Students will then report who their advisors are to the department office via an online form, at the same time uploading an attachment as proof. Students who fail to report by the deadline will all be assigned advisors by the department office, whether they have signed up with any advisors or not.

Please note that the advisors will no longer have the Advisor-Advisee Add/Drop List, and naturally there is no need to return the form by a deadline. Also, please keep a record for yourself so you won’t be adding too many advisees.

The advisor-advisee distribution result will last for the whole school year; however under some special circumstances, students are allowed to change their advisors in the second semester if necessary.

4. About advisee subsidy…
Advisors who take advisees will receive subsidy from the University (approximately NT$750 for each student per semester). It is suggested that advisors use the money to hold activities for advisees. The most customary way of spending the money in our department is to hold a dinner/lunch meeting with your advisees during the semester. You can talk to them while having a relaxing meal. This would be the best chance for you to know your advisees better.

5. If you are new faculty members…
In order to establish your info in the advisor-advisee distribution system and to wire you the subsidy, we need the following information.

(1) ROC ID card number or Number of Alien Residence Certificate
(2)Post account number and code number

6. Advisors’ Committee and related activities
Advisors’ Committee is composed of 10 members and one coordinator. The committee will be re-elected each year around October and all advisors will be considered as obvious candidates.
The mission of the committee is to hold regular meetings, revise regulations related to the advising work, and most important of all, organize meaningful seminars/activities for all DFLL students.

7. Advisors’ plenary
At the end of each semester, Advisors’ Committee would hold a plenary meeting, giving every advisor a chance to share their experiences in advising work with each other. You are most welcome to join us in the meeting.

8. Student rewards & penalties report
Students who perform well during each semester will be given rewards as a form of encouragement, while those who misbehave will be punished by getting penalties.
Students’ conduct grades (操行成績) will be affected by rewards and penalties they received. (The conduct grade)
You will receive a report list at the end of each semester which you can use to recommend rewards or penalties of your advisees.
